Dental plans offered by Humana (NYSE: HUM) and Medisave, Inc. (NYSE/MI/MD: MD/MS/N/PA: MS/NV/PA) are no longer open to people who have dental coverage through the Affordable Care Act.
The change was announced in a notice posted today to the websites.
Humana is one of the major insurers offering plans through the exchanges and Mediasave is the largest of the three.
Humana, Mediasaving and other insurers are offering plans on its own website through an API that allows people to search for dental plans through its website and other third-party sites, including Google and Facebook.
But in an email, a spokesperson for Humana said the company is not offering plans to anyone who has health coverage through Medicaid, the health care program for the poor and disabled.
“This change will help more people have access to dental coverage,” the spokesperson said in the email.
It is unclear what, if any, changes to dental plans may come from the changes to Medicaid.
Health insurance companies offer a wide range of dental plans, including the more affordable MediSave plans and the more expensive Humana plans.
Humana also has plans on the market that are not available through its own site, including plans for dentists who treat patients at a hospital.
The spokesperson said it’s not yet clear how the change will affect people who already have health insurance through the ACA.
There are two ways to opt-in to coverage: Via the phone and through a Medisaver portal.
Dentists, like other workers, have to have a Medicaid card and pay a premium, so if you have health coverage and you want to keep it, you’ll need to pay the premium for each month you have coverage.
For the Medisavers, there’s a one-time $50 application fee that you can pay in order to opt in, the spokesperson wrote.
And the provider will send a confirmation email within two days of opting in.
You can check out your Medisaved plan online at https://medisaver.gov.
There are other options for people who want to opt out.
People who are not able to enroll in the health plan because they can’t afford the premiums can still go through Mediasaves online application process to opt not in.
