SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Sharks defenseman Derek Forbort was not available for comment Friday morning after the team waived his contract, and forward Ryan O’Reilly did not return a call seeking comment.
The Sharks also did not have comment on defenseman Matt Irwin.
Forbort has been one of the most effective players in the NHL for the past few seasons, posting 27 points in 49 games with the Sharks.
He’s had a rough season in that span, posting one point in six games.
The 29-year-old has scored one goal in three games.
In a statement, Sharks coach Todd McLellan said the team “reached out to” Irwin, and that the veteran forward was available to play on the third line with Forborts two-way linemates Josh Jooris and Ryan Johnston.
The team’s other two forwards are Matt Nieto and Andrew Desjardins.
Forberts contract with the San Jose Sharks expires at the end of the season.
The Sharks’ other defenseman was left out of the roster on Friday, as well, as he was sidelined with a concussion.
